Privilege 39 Catamaran and Land Rover Defender

Two Dream Machines

Dream machines are a big part of our lives. These machines are designed to transport us in time and space to places that we could not easily reach by any other means.

Privilege 39 Catamaran - Our catamaran, Exit Only, is 39.5 feet long and 21 feet wide.  It weighs about 16,000 lbs unloaded and when all our cruising gear is onboard, it tips the scales at 20,000 lbs.  That is heavy for catamaran, but since we are cruising, it really does not matter.  We aren't trying to set any speed records.  We just want a strong boat.  We don't ever want to get into an argument with the ocean, but if it happens, this boat can take a licking and keep on ticking.  We have a lot of confidence in our catamaran and we are willing to bet our lives on it.
Catamarans have special sailing characteristics that make them into excellent trade wind cruising yachts.  They run downwind effortlessly day after day without any of the rolling that is so typical of downwind sailing in monohull sailboats.  They are unballasted and therefore tend to not sink if they spring a leak while they are at sea.  Even in a catastrophic accident in which the boat is severely damaged, the catamaran usually remains habitable until help arrives.

Land Rover Defender - We have owned four Defender 110 Land Rovers and one Defender 130.  We have used all of them for expeditionary travel off-road in the desert.  Three of them were used in the Arabian desert and two are used for land cruising in Australia and New Zealand.  The Defender is the most capable expeditionary four wheel drive vehicle in the world.  You can load it up with thirteen jerry cans, two hundred liters of water, camping gear, food, and still put four people inside the vehicle.  Fully loaded, you can drive it for 1200 kilometers off road without outside support.  It's extremely capable and reliable.  It will take you Outback and Beyond and bring you back safely.

The Defender is one of the most affordable dream machines on Planet Earth.  You can go to Australia or Great Britain and pick up a five year old Defender that is in reasonable shape for around ten-thousand US dollars.  That's not much money to spend on a dream machine that can take you around the world if you decide to go land cruising.  Just sitting behind the wheel of a Defender will get your juices flowing and in your mind you will find yourself traveling in the Outback and Beyond.
